چکیده

[1] The Nordfjord area of western Norway hosts one of the best known provinces of ultrahigh-pressure (UHP) rocks in the world, yet the nature of the transition from the UHP rocks into surrounding amphibolite-facies crust has remained unclear. New thermobarometry of phengiteand kyanite-bearing eclogites shows that this transition is unbroken by major structures: the pressure and temperature gradient increases smoothly over a horizontal distance of 20 km, from high-pressure amphibolite facies ( 1.5 GPa/600–700 C) through quartz eclogite ( 2.4 GPa/600 C) into UHP eclogite (>2.7 GPa/ 700 C). These data support a model in which the Norwegian UHP province remained attached to lower pressure crust during exhumation. This requires that a large area of the Western Gneiss Region was metamorphosed and exhumed 60 km through the mantle, as a relatively coherent body. Citation: Young, D. J., B. R. Hacker, T. B. High-temperature deformation during continental-margin subduction & exhumation: The ultrahigh-pressure Western Gneiss Region of Norway

A new dataset for the high-pressure to ultrahigh-pressure Western Gneiss Region allows the definition of distinct structural and petrological domains.Much of the study area is an E-dippinghomoclinewith E-plunging lineations that exposes progressively deeper, more strongly deformed, more eclogite-rich structural levels westward. Although eclogites crop out across the WGR, Scandian deformation is...

Exhuming Norwegian Ultrahigh-Pressure Rocks: Overprinting Extensional Structures and the Roleof the Nordfjord-Sogn Detachment Zone

[1] The Nordfjord-Sogn Detachment Zone(NSDZ) is widely cited as one of the primary structures responsible for the exhumation of Norwegian (ultra)high-pressure (UHP) rocks. Here we review data from the considerable volume of research describing this shear zone, and compile a strikeparallel cross section along the NSDZ from the Solund Basin in the south to the Sørøyane UHP domain in the north. The fate of subducted continental margins: Two-stage exhumation of the high-pressure to ultrahigh-pressure Western Gneiss Region, Norway

Thermobarometry suggests that ultrahigh-pressure (UHP) to high-pressure (HP) rocks across the Western Gneiss Region ponded at the Moho following as much as 100 km of exhumation through the mantle and before exhumation to the upper crust. Eclogite across the c. 22 000 km study area records minimum pressures of c. 8–18 kbar and temperatures of c. 650–780 C. One orthopyroxene eclogite yields an UH...

Discrete ultrahigh-pressure domains in the Western Gneiss Region, Norway: implications for formation and exhumation

New eclogite localities and new Ar/Ar ages within the Western Gneiss Region of Norway define three discrete ultrahigh-pressure (UHP) domains that are separated by distinctly lower pressure, eclogite facies rocks. The sizes of the UHP domains range from c. 2500 to 100 km; if the UHP culminations are part of a continuous sheet at depth, the Western Gneiss Region UHP terrane has minimum dimensions...

Exhumation of high-pressure rocks beneath the Solund Basin, Western Gneiss Region of Norway

The Solund–Hyllestad–Lavik area affords an excellent opportunity to understand the ultrahigh-pressure Scandian orogeny because it contains a near-complete record of ophiolite emplacement, high-pressure metamorphism and large-scale extension. In this area, the Upper Allochthon was intruded by the c. 434 Ma Sogneskollen granodiorite and thrust eastward over the Middle ⁄ Lower Allochthon, probably...
